The overall gameplay experience in playing Hunter Assassin 2 by Ruby Game Studio is engaging and challenging. The game is easy to pick up and play, with simple tap controls that make it easy to navigate through levels. It is enjoyable and engaging, providing a challenging and rewarding experience for players who enjoy stealth and strategy-based games, which is a big green flag.


Normally I don't give mobile ads a second glance. In this case, I'm actually developing a stealth game myself and have been trying to sample as many titles from the genre as possible to get a good feel for what I should and shouldn't aim for in a game. That said, I'll also let Hunter Assassin serve as a cautionary tale as what happens when you follow a mobile ad to the dark recesses of its Google Play page.


Controls here are simple, which is one of the few good things I can say about the game. Your character will move to any location that you tap, which will be somewhere within a maze of concrete walls and wooden crates. Contact with an enemy will result in you immediately killing them, whereas enemies that spot you will stop and begin shooting at you. Killing an enemy or being spotted will cause enemies to swarm the last location they heard or saw you for a time, after which they will slow down and begin wandering a bit more aimlessly again.


So what's the issue here? Well... That's really all there is to the gameplay. When enemies spot you, you have a split second grace period before they start shooting, which allows you to pop out from around corners and nail an enemy head-on, especially if you're close enough. This, combined with instant death upon collision, makes the game extraordinarily easy. This is only further exacerbated by enemy AI, since their tendency to flock to one location upon hearing you kill someone makes it easy for you to group them together and kill them all at the same time. The only time you risk dying in this game is if you're surrounded, but the enemy AI almost seems to avoid spreading out and creating more tense situations such as these. Stealth games feel good when the player is underpowered and needs to use problem solving and tactics to win, and this game has none of that.


What really makes this shortcoming unforgivable is that the game has literally nothing else. There's only one enemy type, they all have the same behavior, and the maps are all static - nothing is destructible or moves. Later levels have more enemies and may be slightly larger, but are otherwise no different from previous levels. The blandness of the level design makes it seem as though the levels themselves are procedurally generated - no single level is in any way memorable, and the game devs surely realized this, because you actually can't replay previous levels - the play button will only take you to the next level in what seems like an unending sequence of monotony. Every 30 levels you get a bonus level in which you face off against a large volume of enemies (perhaps 30,) except... They don't attack you? You literally just run into them one after another until the level ends.


Different objectives (such as killing a certain number of enemies or beating a level without being seen or taking damage) rewards you with gems. Completing levels also gives you gems, which can be used to unlock better playable characters. Except this is done in perhaps the least logical way possible. The only difference between different characters are potential bonuses to their health or movement speed. For instance, several different characters might have a 10%, 20%, or 30% boost to their movement speed, meaning that there's no reason to use any character other than the one with the largest bonus (potentially switching between a speed or health bonus based on your personal preference.) But what makes this particularly pointless is that each time you spend gems to unlock a character, you unlock a RANDOM one. In other words, if you get lucky and unlock the best character the first time you use gems to unlock one, you literally have no reason ever to upgrade ever again. And since this is the only way you can spend gems, it also means that gems lose their usefulness altogether. If that isn't enough, every level is completely beatable (and trivially easy) EVEN with the STARTING character. So even the best characters in this game provide only a minimal, non-significant impact on the overall game experience. This is made all the more uninspired by the fact that the number of gems you need to unlock a character jumps from 1000 to 5000 to 10000, and the amount of gems you get per level does not scale up, even a little bit. So not only are new characters pointless, but unlocking them is prohibitively slow.


All of this, and I still haven't touched on the ads. THE ADS. A level in this game might last about 10-30 seconds, since you move fast and enemies go down fast. Ads usually last around the same amount of time, and you can expect to be forced to watch an ad for every 3-4 levels. On its own, this means you spend perhaps 20-25% of your time watching ads rather than playing the game. Except that the game tries to shoehorn you into watching ads for other purposes, too. For instance, you can get double the (useless) gems by watching an ad after completing each level, potentially raising the amount of time spent watching ads to over 50%, and you occasionally are given loot boxes (which contain more gems) which you can only open by watching an ad. The "no thanks" button is actually invisible for about 3-4 seconds in an attempt to trick you into thinking that watching the ad is the ONLY way to progress. The same hidden button trick is used for bonus levels, which offer more gems than other levels.


The graphics here look very similar to a 2D Counter Strike game I saw pop up in the early 2000s. The graphics are mostly clean, but very basic, and particularly monotonous when combined with how repetitive the game itself is. The animations are decent, which is further made smoother by the physics functioning well, but the lack of variety makes this painful to look at for more than a few minutes. The loot boxes are also so poorly drawn and match with the rest of the game's aesthetic so poorly that I'm almost certain at least some of the graphics were ripped off of some free asset store.


If each level takes you around 20 seconds to complete, and the game has at least 200 levels, you're looking at a bit over an hour of solid gameplay, or several times that if you neglect to stop the ads from popping up. That said, this game isn't worth ANY of your time, certainly no more than 5 minutes.


Hunter Assassin feels almost like the basic engine someone makes of a stealth game before they implement more features. Why this was released when level 1 has the same content as level 200, I have no idea. Then again, the same could be said for practically every other design decision (perhaps oversight would be more accurate) that went into this title. I implore you not to look further into this game. It is a colossal waste of time, and ultimately seems like a cheap grab to make you sit through ads.
